Holy Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door that gives access to the other sacraments. It is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation). Through Baptism, we are freed from Original Sin and reborn as children of God. We become members of the Body of Christ, incorporated into the Church, and made sharers in the Church's mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and the word."

Preparation & Formation

  • Infants: Usually baptized prior to their first birthday. Parents and Godparents receive instruction regarding their responsibility to foster and promote the spiritual growth of the child in the Catholic faith. The Baptism class is scheduled with Suzanne Schweitzer upon registration.
  • Older Children (Ages 7+): Those old enough to understand the commitment of Baptism receive extensive instruction prior to receiving the sacrament. Catechism classes run from September to May, every Tuesday from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. During the first year, students receive the Sacrament of Baptism, and during the second year, they complete their preparation to receive First Holy Communion.


Registration & Guidelines

  • Authorization: Parents are the only ones authorized to register their child for Baptism. If parents are separated, a letter of permission from the separated parent is required.
  • Parish Registration: Parents and Godparents must be registered parishioners at St. Vincent. If they belong to another parish, they must provide a Sponsor Letter from their church.
  • Timing & Office Hours: Registration and guidance are available at the Church Office two months prior to the date of Baptism. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
  • Requirements at Registration: A copy of the child’s birth certificate and a $50.00 registration fee are required at the time of registration.
  • Baptism Schedule: Baptisms are held on the last Saturday of the month at 4:30pm.


Godparent Requirements

To serve as a Godparent, an individual must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Have received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
  • Attend Mass regularly on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.
  • If married, be married in the Catholic Church.
  • If single, not be cohabitating.
  • Not be the mother or father of the child.
